In the United States, high school and college students don varsity jackets, sometimes called letterman jackets, to show school pride and accomplishment in athletics or the classroom. The usual design of the jacket is a wool body with leather sleeves, ribbed collar, and belt. On the front or back of the jacket, along with the student’s embroidered name and/or sport/activity sign on the sleeve, are frequently seen as the school’s initials or mascot.

The varsity jacket has a long history that dates back to the 1800s when the baseball team at Harvard University started donning them to represent camaraderie and solidarity. They gained popularity among high school and college athletes in the 1930s and 1940s, then in the 1950s

Varsity jackets remain fashionable now and are still worn by students and athletes. They have even made it into mainstream culture. They are offered in various hues and designs, and patches, embroidery, and other personalized touches can be added. Varsity jackets are still a recognizable part of American society, whether you wear one to show off your school passion or just for fashion.
